Power allocation across users in two adjacent cells is studied for a code-division multiple access (CDMA) data service. The forward link is considered and cells are modeled as one-dimensional with uniformly distributed users and orthogonal signatures within each cell. Each user is assumed to have a utility function that describes the user's received utility, or willingness to pay, for a received signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR). The objective is to allocate the transmitted power to maximize the total utility summed over all users subject to power constraints in each cell. It is first shown that this optimization can be achieved by a pricing scheme in which each base station announces a price per unit transmitted power to the users, and each user requests power to maximize individual surplus (utility minus cost). Setting prices to maximize total revenue over both cells is also considered, and it is shown that, in general, the solution is different from the one obtained by maximizing total utility. Conditions are given for which independent optimization in each cell, which leads to a Nash equilibrium (NE), is globally optimal. It is shown that, in general, coordination between the two cells is needed to achieve the maximum utility or revenue.  相似文献

Suppose that a test customer in anM/D/1queueing system can get service only if he has access to the server and a separate eventEhas occurred. All other customers only require access to the server. The time until the eventEoccurs is assumed to be an exponentially distributed random variable, if the test customer reaches the server beforeEoccurs, he must then return to the back of the queue. At any time, however, the test customer is allowed to give up his place in the queue and join the back of the queue. The test customer represents a computational task that depends upon the results of an associated task. The test customer's mean delay until service is derived assuming that he always maintains his position in the queue until he reaches the server. Conditions are given for which this "move-along" policy is optimal, i.e., minimizes the test customer's mean delay until service. Previous research has shown pigeons to be insensitive to the orientation of visual test stimuli both for response latency and for discrimination ratio. Discrimination of stimulus orientation has been more difficult to learn than discrimination of small arbitrary differences between stimuli. This has suggested that the visual processing of pigeons is orientation invariant, which would obviate the need for mental rotation such as is often observed in studies with human subjects. Contrary to previous findings, the current experiment obtained linear effects of orientation on response latency and discrimination ratio, with a go/no-go procedure. Pigeons (Columbia livia) first learned to discriminate among line drawings of similar objects and then were tested with rotated versions of the drawings. The pattern of data is similar to that found in studies of human recognition of rotated objects. One speculative explanation of this finding is the mental rotation of stimuli by pigeons. STUDY OBJECTIVES: To determine the relationship of literacy to asthma knowledge and ability to use a metered-dose inhaler (MDI) among patients with asthma. DESIGN: Cross-sectional survey. SETTING: Emergency department and asthma clinic at an urban public hospital. PATIENTS: Convenience sample of 273 patients presenting to the emergency department for an asthma exacerbation and 210 patients presenting to a specialized asthma clinic for routine care. INTERVENTIONS: Measurement of literacy with the Rapid Estimate of Adult Literacy in Medicine, asthma knowledge (20 question oral test), and demonstration of MDI technique (six-item assessment). MEASUREMENTS AND RESULTS: Only 27% of patients read at the high-school level, although two thirds reported being high-school graduates; 33% read at the seventh- to eighth-grade level, 27% at the fourth- to sixth-grade level, and 13% at or below the third-grade level. Mean asthma knowledge scores (+/-SD) were directly related to reading levels: 15.1+/-2.5, 13.9+/-2.5, 13.4+/-2.8, 11.9+/-2.5, respectively (p < 0.01). Patient reading level was the strongest predictor of asthma knowledge score in multivariate analysis. Poor MDI technique (< or =3 correct steps) was found in 89% of patients reading at less than the third-grade level compared with 48% of patients reading at the high-school level. In multivariate regression analyses, reading level was the strongest predictor of MDI technique. CONCLUSIONS: Inadequate literacy was common and strongly correlated with poorer knowledge of asthma and improper MDI use.  相似文献

Salt dependent electrostatic effects play a central role in intermolecular interactions involving nucleic acids. In this paper, the finite-difference solution to the nonlinear Poisson-Boltzmann (NLPB) equation is used to evaluate the salt dependent contribution to the electrostatic binding free energy of the minor groove binding antibiotics DAPI, Hoechst 33258 and netropsin to DNA using detailed molecular structures of the complexes. For each of these systems, a treatment based on the NLPB equation accurately describes the variation of the experimentally observed binding constant with bulk salt concentration. A solvation formalism is developed in which salt effects are described in terms of three free energy contributions: the electrostatic ion-molecule interaction free energy, delta delta G degrees im; the electrostatic ion-ion interaction free energy, delta delta G degrees ii; and the entropic ion organization free energy, delta delta G degrees org. The electrostatic terms, delta delta G degrees im and delta delta G degrees ii, have both enthalpic and entropic components, while the term delta delta G degrees org is purely a cratic entropy. Each of these terms depends significantly on salt dependent changes in the counterion and coion concentrations around the DNA. In each of the systems studied, univalent ions substantially destabilize charged ligand-DNA complexes at physiological salt concentrations. This effect involves a salt dependent redistribution of counterions near the DNA. The free energy associated with the redistribution of counterions upon binding is dominated by the unfavorable change in the electrostatic ion-molecule interactions, delta delta G degrees im, rather than the change in the cratic entropy of ion organization, delta delta G degrees org. In addition, the observed slope of the salt dependence of the free energy is determined by electrostatic ion-molecule and ion-ion interactions as well as the cratic entropy of ion release. These findings are in contrast to models in which the cratic entropy of counterion release drives binding.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider packet scheduling for the downlink in a wireless network, where each packet's service preferences are captured by a utility function that depends on the total delay incurred. The goal is to schedule packet transmissions to maximize the total utility. In this setting, we examine a simple gradient-based scheduling algorithm called the U/spl dot/R-rule, which is a type of generalized c/spl mu/-rule (Gc/spl mu/) that takes into account both a user's channel condition and derived utility when making scheduling decisions. We study the performance of this scheduling rule for a draining problem, where there is a given set of initial packets and no further arrivals. We formulate a "large system" fluid model for this draining problem where the number of packets becomes large while the packet-size decreases to zero, and give a complete characterization of the behavior of the U/spl dot/R scheduling rule in this limiting regime. Comparison with simulation results show that the fluid limit accurately predicts the corresponding behavior of finite systems of interest. We then give an optimal control formulation for finding the optimal scheduling policy for the fluid draining model. Using Pontryagin's minimum principle, we show that, when the user rates are chosen from a TDM-type of capacity region, the U/spl dot/R rule is in fact optimal in many cases. Sufficient conditions for optimality are also given. Finally, we consider a general capacity region and show that the U/spl dot/R rule is optimal only in special cases.  相似文献

Feedback in a communications system can enable the transmitter to exploit channel conditions and avoid interference. In the case of a multiple-input multiple-output channel, feedback can be used to specify a precoding matrix at the transmitter, which activates the strongest channel modes. In situations where the feedback is severely limited, important issues are how to quantize the information needed at the transmitter and how much improvement in associated performance can be obtained as a function of the amount of feedback available. We give an overview of some recent work in this area. Methods are presented for constructing a set of possible precoding matrices, from which a particular choice can be relayed to the transmitter. Performance results show that even a few bits of feedback can provide performance close to that with full channel knowledge at the transmitter.  相似文献

We consider a direct sequence (DS-) code division multiple access (CDMA) system with orthogonally multiplexed pilot signals and minimum mean squared error (MMSE) data and channel estimation. Both flat and frequency-selective fading channels are considered. Large system analysis is used to optimize the pilot-to-data power ratio (PDR) and the code rate for a fixed bandwidth expansion. Specifically, the PDR is selected to minimize the probability of error subject to a constraint on transmitted power. When the MMSE filter estimates the channel of the desired user, but averages over the channels of the interferers (corresponding to an adaptive filter in moderate to fast fading), the optimal PDR is less than that for the matched filter (MF). That is, the MMSE filter benefits from allocating more power to the data. When the MMSE filter directly incorporates estimates of all users' channel coefficients, the optimal PDR is greater than that for the MF. System performance as a function of code rate is characterized through both probability of error and cutoff rate. The optimal code rate for the MMSE receiver is generally higher than that for the MF, and increases with load and Eb/N0. In the presence of fading, and with channel estimation, the optimal code rate approaches zero for both MMSE and MF receivers, but the MMSE filter is more robust with respect to a suboptimal choice of code rate  相似文献
