Background

Environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) is a recognised air pollutant. Its harmful effects have been found to be implicated in health disorders, including unfavourable pregnancy outcomes. The discrepancy between self‐reported emvironmental tobacco smoke exposure and cotinine levels in pregnant non‐smokers in France was examined.

Method

Plasma cotinine was determined by a CPG‐SM method on women who had answered a self‐questionnaire describing their habits and environment during pregnancy.

Results

Of 698 pregnant women reported as non‐smokers, 305 (43.7%) claimed not to be exposed to ETS, yet 196 of these (64.3%) had plasma cotinine levels above the limit of detection.

Conclusion

Self‐reported data on ETS exposure in pregnant women therefore underestimate actual exposure. However, cotinine assay cab rectify this misclassification. An accurate identification of this risk factore will help to change attitudes towards ETS and avert its adverse effects on mother and fetus.Although environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) has not yet been monitored in France, it is probably, as in the United States National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (1999–2002), a major source of indoor air pollution. Low levels of ETS exposure can result in unfavourable pregnancy outcomes,1,2 and many pregnant women still believe that not smoking is sufficient to protect their fetus from ETS. Moreover, far less attention has been paid to perinatal ETS exposure. A better appraisal of these non‐maternal sources and measurement of corresponding prenatal exposure will provide a useful basis for further work and discussion on its effects.  相似文献

Short range surface plasmon resonators are investigated at the nanometer scale. Gold nanorods (30 nm in diameter) were microfabricated and probed by photoemission electron microscopy under direct laser light excitation. Resonances presenting various numbers of lobes occur for specific rod lengths. A simple analytical model shows that the successive resonant lengths differ by a multiple of one-half of the wavelength of the supported short-range surface plasmon polariton.  相似文献

This article exposes the beginnings of a new field which could be named as “plasmomechanics”. Plasmomechanics comes from the convergence between mechanics and plasmonics. Here we discuss a relatively recent topic whose technological aim is the development of plasmonic strain sensors. The idea is based on the ability to deduce Au nanoparticles (NPs) distance distributions from polarized optical extinction spectroscopy which could thus give access to material strains. Variations of interparticle distances distributions can indeed lead to variations of plasmonic coupling and thus to material color change as shown here experimentally and numerically for random Au NP assemblies deposited onto elastomer films.  相似文献

Whether low environmental doses of dioxin affect the general population is the matter of intense debate and controversy. In a previous study, we found a 2.3-fold risk for non-Hodgkin lymphoma associated with residence in areas classified as highly exposed to dioxin emitted from a municipal solid waste incinerator (MSWI) (Besan?on, France). The main limitation lay within the use of a first-generation Gaussian-type dispersion model as a proxy for dioxin exposure, since its accuracy had not been assessed before. The aim of this study was to validate this geographic-based exposure through PCDD/F measurements from soil samples. PCDD/F concentration, pH, organic carbon concentration, cation exchange capacity, and geomorphology and ecology features were assessed for 75 sampling points. In simple terrain (i.e. northeast of the MSWI), a significant association was highlighted between modeled dioxin ground-level air concentrations and log-transformed measured dioxin soil concentrations with a strong gradient across exposure categories. Conversely, in a complex topography situation (i.e. southwest of the MSWI), the model overpredicted ground-level air concentrations, particularly in the high exposure zone. First-generation modeling provided a reliable proxy for dioxin exposure in simple terrain, reinforcing the results of our case-control study. However, a more advanced atmospheric diffusion model should have been used for refined assessment in complex terrain.  相似文献

This paper analyses a handwriting recognition system for offline cursive words based on HMMs. It compares two approaches for transforming offline handwriting available as two-dimensional images into one-dimensional input signals that can be processed by HMMs. In the first approach, a left–right scan of the word is performed resulting in a sequence of feature vectors. In the second approach, a more subtle process attempts to recover the temporal order of the strokes that form words as they were written. This is accomplished by a graph model that generates a set of paths, each path being a possible temporal order of the handwriting. The recognition process then selects the most likely temporal stroke order based on knowledge that has been acquired from a large set of handwriting samples for which the temporal information was available. We show experimentally that such an offline recognition system using the recovered temporal order can achieve recognition performances that are much better than those obtained with the simple left–right order, and that come close to those of an online recognition system. We have been able to assess the ordering quality of handwriting when comparing true ordering and recovered one, and we also analyze the situations where offline and online information differ and what the consequences are on the recognition performances. For these evaluations, we have used about 30,000 words from the IRONOFF database that features both the online signal and offline signal for each word.  相似文献
