Mobile context-aware applications execute in the background of hosts mobile devices. The applications source process and aggregate hosts’ contextual and personal information. This information is disclosed to ubiquitously pervasive services that adapt their offerings to individual preferences. Unfortunately, many developers continue to ignore the user perspective in context-aware application designs as they complicate their overall task and generate exponential requirements. The additional incorporation of privacy mechanisms in context-aware applications to safeguard context and personal information disclosures also complicates users’ tasks resulting to misconfigured or completely abandoned applications. Misconfigured applications give end-users a false assurance of privacy exposing them to comprising services. We present a usability study on Mobile Electronic Personality Version 2 a privacy enhanced context-aware mobile application for personalising ubiquitous services and adapting pervasive smart-spaces. We draw conclusions on key issues related to user needs, based on user interviews, surveys, prototypes and field evaluations. Users’ needs are evaluated against five themes, learn-ability, efficiency, memorability, errors, satisfaction and privacy contention. In addition, design layout preferences, privacy manageability and consensus design comprehension are also evaluated. Clarity of priorities in context-aware mobile applications shaped by usability studies effectively increases the acceptance of levels of potential users.  相似文献

ABSTRACT:  Defatted Carmel variety almond skin powder (ASP) irradiated at 0, 10, 20, and 30 kGy was mixed with ground top round beef at 0.5% (w/w) and stored at 4 °C. Color stability, peroxide values (PV), conjugated dienes (CD), thiobarbituric acid reactive species (TBARS), and hexanal were determined periodically over a 2-wk period. The L values were not affected by time or treatment. Initially, the redness ( a value) was higher for both the negative control with no ASP ( a value of 21.83) and positive control with 0.01% BHT ( a value of 22.33) compared to samples that contained the ASP ( a values from 17.70 to 20.17) on day 1. This decrease in redness was attributed to the presence of the ASP. Similar to day 1, the a values were not significantly different between the 2 controls over the duration of the study. All the samples with ASP exhibited lower lipid oxidation when compared to the negative control, with greatest oxidation retardation observed at 20 and 30 kGy. Over the treatment period, a 13% to 85% reduction in PV and a 40% to 80% reduction in TBARS were observed in the sample with 30 kGy ASP compared to the negative control. Generally, PV and TBARS of samples with ASP decreased with an increase in irradiation dose. While a difference due to irradiation dose was not observed in CD and hexanal content, the values were significantly lower ( P < 0.05) than the controls over time. This study demonstrates that almond skin power could be used to extend the shelf life of refrigerated ground raw beef.  相似文献

The antimicrobial effect of roasted coffee filtrate (CF) and dicarbonyls on Salmonella Typhimurium and Salmonella Enteritidis in raw ground chicken breast meat (GCB) was investigated. Coffee was brewed and filtered before addition to GCB. Coffee filtrate with and without added caffeine, methylglyoxal, and/or glyoxal was added to GCB and then inoculated with Salmonella Typhimurium and Salmonella Enteritidis. Ground chicken samples were stomached with peptone water at days 1, 3, 5, and 7, plated on XLD agar with a TSA overlay, and Salmonella survivors were enumerated. CF alone gave less than a 1 Log reduction in all runs compared to control GCB with no treatment. Methylglyoxal (2.28 mg/g GCB) had the greatest antimicrobial effect against Salmonella Typhimurium and Salmonella Enteritidis in GCB with average Log reductions of 2.27 to 3.23, respectively, over the 7 d duration of the experiment compared to control GCB with no treatment. A 1 Log reduction was observed in GCB with CF, 0.93 mg glyoxal, and 1 mg caffeine/g chicken compared to the control and GCB with only CF. Heat-produced coffee compounds could potentially reduce Salmonella in retail ground chicken and chicken products.  相似文献

In fresh milk, plasminogen, the zymogen form of plasmin (PL), is the predominant form. Therefore, plasminogen activators (PA) can contribute significantly to PL activity in milk. Both tissue-type PA (tPA) and urokinase-type PA (uPA) exist in milk; however, contradictory findings have been reported for which type of PA is most closely associated with the casein micelles. Little is known about the factors that might lead to variations in the individual activities of the PA. The objective of this work was therefore to investigate possible factors that might affect the association of tPA and uPA with the casein micelle and their activities thereafter. Plasminogen activators were isolated from milk samples with different somatic cell counts following 2 different isolation protocols. Determination of uPA, tPA, and PL activities was carried out quantitatively following chromogenic assays using 2 different substrates, and qualitatively using specialized sodium dodecyl sulfate-PAGE. Different isolation methods and conditions led to differences in uPA, tPA, and PL activities. Urokinase-type PA activity was significantly higher in PA fractions isolated from milk with high somatic cell counts than from milk with low somatic cell counts. Activity results indicated that in pasteurized milk uPA could dissociate from the somatic cells and bind to casein. Moreover, a high level of PL in isolated PA fractions contributed to significantly enhanced PA activities. Overall, results confirmed the association of both uPA and tPA with the casein micelle; however, their amounts, activities, and molecular weights varied based on the nature of the milk and methods of separation, with uPA being the PA with greater potential to affect plasminogen activation in milk.  相似文献

Context: Gambogic acid (GA) can inhibit the growth of various cancer cells. However, the low bioavailability caused by insolubility, limits its clinical application. L-arginine is always used with GA to form a complex to obtain the higher solubility. Moreover, guanidyl group from arginine, which can facilitate the cellular uptake, was identified.

Objective: In this study, L-arginine and chitosan (CS) were used for the first time to prepare N-octyl-N-arginine CS (OACS), a novel amphiphilic carrier for GA with solubility- and absorption-enhancing functions; the characterization of the GA loaded OACS micelles (GA-OACS) and its absorption-enhancing effect were also investigated.

Materials and methods: GA-OACS were prepared by the dialysis method. The formed micelles were characterized and evaluated by atomic force microscope (AFM), dynamic light scattering, differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), solubility test, in vitro release and in situ intestinal perfusion.

Results: The GA-OACS micelles were successfully prepared attaining a 35.3% drug loading and 82.2% entrapment efficiency. GA-OACS had a homogeneous particle size of 160.3?nm; +21.8?mv zeta potential with smooth continuous surface was observed by using AFM. DSC diagram suggested that GA was encapsulated in the micelles. Meanwhile, GA encapsulated in micelles exhibited a desirable slow release in vitro experiment. The solubility of GA in OACS micelles was increased up to 3.16?±?0.13?mg/mL, 2320 times than that of free GA. The single pass perfusion showed that the absorption of GA-OACS micelles was enhanced 3.6-fold, 2.1-fold and 2.2-fold for jejunum, ileum and colon, respectively.

Discussion and conclusion: OACS provided excellent ability of drug loading, increasing solubility and enhanced absorption for GA, which indicated that OACS micelles as an oral drug delivery carrier may have potential research and application values.  相似文献

The efficacy and stability against Listeria monocytogenes of nisin and lysozyme encapsulated in phospholipid liposomes was evaluated. Antimicrobial-containing liposomes were prepared by hydrating dried lipids with buffer containing nisin, nisin plus the fluorescence probe calcein, or calcein and lysozyme. Mixtures were then centrifuged and sonicated, and encapsulated liposomes were collected using size-exclusion chromatography. Antimicrobial concentration in liposomes was determined by bicinchoninic acid assay prior to determination of antimicrobial activity against strains of L. monocytogenes. When nisin was encapsulated in liposomes, protein concentrations of 0.39, 0.27, and 0.23 mg/ml for phosphatidylcholine (PC), PC-cholesterol (7:3), and PC-phosphatidylglycerol (PG)-cholesterol (5:2:3), respectively, were obtained. Encapsulation of nisin with calcein yielded protein concentrations of 0.35, 0.39, and 0.28 mg/ml for PC, PC-cholesterol, and PC-PG-cholesterol, respectively. Encapsulation of calcein with lysozyme resulted in protein concentrations of 0.43, 0.26, and 0.19 mg/ml for PC, PC-cholesterol, and PC-PG-cholesterol, respectively. Encapsulated nisin in 100% PC and PC-cholesterol liposomes inhibited bacterial growth by >2 log CFU/ml compared with free nisin. Growth inhibition with liposomal lysozyme was strain dependent, with greater inhibition observed for strains 310 and Scott A with PC-cholesterol and PC-PG-cholesterol liposomes. Inhibition of L. monocytogenes indicated the potential of liposomes to serve as delivery vehicles for antimicrobials in foods while improving stability of antimicrobials.  相似文献

Allyl diglycol carbonate (CR39)® is a thermosetting polymer of interest both as an ophthalmic material and as a material intermediate between brittle and ductile solids. The response to impact in the crack-threshold range has been studied and compared to that of glass. The energy absorbed upon impact, the plastic deformation, and the crack resistance are all found to be greater for CR39, and the relationships between these factors are discussed. The developments of impact response for CR39 with increasing temperature and increasing impact energy beyond the crack-threshold range have also been studied.  相似文献

Metal pollution and its health effects present a challenge currently facing the developing countries. Metal poisoning is usually difficult and expensive to assess or screen in these countries due to limited resources, which means that policies, guidelines, regulations and institutional managements are limited. Hair and nail as biopsy materials were suggested as more attractive biomarkers in assessing heavy metals environmental exposure. This paper deals with quantitative determination of lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), calcium (Ca), zinc (Zn), and iron (Fe) in fingernails of children (n=200) in urban and rural areas using atomic absorption spectrometry. Factors that were suspected to influence the accumulation of Pb and Cd in children were obtained through a questionnaire. The mean levels of heavy metals in children in urban areas were found to be higher (27.5+/-1.8 microg/g Pb and 0.73+/-0.08 microg/g Cd) than in rural areas (19.7+/-0.9 microg/g Pb and 0.44+/-0.06 microg/g Cd). The difference was significant (P<0.05; DF=168, t-test). Other factors that were found to have significant influence were socio-economic background, health conditions, dietary habits and environmental risk exposure. The results also showed that the school location has more influence on the heavy metals level than the area of residence. The children in a school near the highway were found to have a mean of 34.4+/-3.5 microg/g Pb as compared to those who lived near the highway (31.6+/-2.8 microg/g Pb), however the difference was not significant (P>0.05), suggesting a common source of contaminants in the areas. The correlation results also indicated that a high level of Pb in the nail influenced negatively Zn and Fe but not Ca levels (R=-0.256 Zn; -0.188 Fe) while high levels of Cd had a negative relationship with Fe only (R=-0.241). The association of toxic metals in the nails of children with environmental exposure, and nutritional status implies that policies and actions to reduce heavy metal levels must be implemented and reinforced to address the health issues affecting children and by extension the general public in this country.  相似文献
