Multimedia group applications often operate in an environment where the various participants are located on systems and communication links with different capabilities. Mechanisms are required that ensure full-quality media for high-performance workstations but lower-quality media for playout at low-end systems. QoS filters have been proposed as a way to adapt QoS to the user specified level by changing the structure of a media stream in a well defined way. Resource reservation and QoS filter instantiation should be closely integrated since both represent one particular aspect of the provision of individualistic QoS for heterogeneous users in multipeer communications. The Internet reservation protocol RSVP is receiver oriented and allows each receiver to specify its resource requirements. However, no actual mechanisms are defined that adapt the data stream to the receiver specified QoS requirements.In this paper we present an enhanced version of RSVP (called RSVP++) that integrates resource reservation and QoS filter control. In order to achieve this integration we extend the RSVP functional model and define a new QoS service class. RSVP++ can coexist with common RSVP systems, thus, openness and interoperability of the system are ensured.  相似文献

Microparticulate crosslinked polystyrene packings in short columns have been investigated with high performance liquid chromatography instrumentation. Reliable molecular weight data for six polystyrene standards having narrow molecular weight distributions and for a polystyrene having a broad distribution have been obtained by optimizing the injection procedure, using a constant flow pump, and incorporating an internal standard into each injected solution. Experimental determinations of the dependence of the polydispersity for polystyrene standards on eluent flow rate and polymer diffusion coefficient were in agreement with a relation predicted from theoretical considerations of chromotogram broadening. Because of the dependence of chromatogram broadening on polystyrene molecular weight, high efficiency separations for high polymers were only obtained at low eluent flow rates. For low polymers, high efficiency separations may be performed at fast eluent flow rates. It was concluded that accurate molecular weight distributions can only be determined from chromatograms obtained at low eluent flow rates, which was supported by experimental measurements of polydispersity on polystyrene sample prepared by a radical polymerization at low monomer conversion. A differential weight distribution calculated from an experimental chromatogram for the polydisperse polystyrene determined at the lowest eluent flow rate (0.1 cm3min?1) was compared with distributions predicted theoretically for polystyrenes prepared by radical polymerization. It was concluded that the experimental distribution contained a small contribution from chromatogram broadening and that most of the radicals in the polymerization of styrene terminated by combination.  相似文献

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the relationship between the degree of degeneration at the supraspinatus insertion, the tensile strength, and the site of failure of this tendon. Thirty-three fresh cadaveric shoulders (average age: 62 years; range: 39-83 years) were examined. A tensile load to failure was applied at a constant crosshead speed of 25.4 mm/min to a 10 mm wide strip of the supraspinatus tendon that remained attached to the bone. Preexisting degenerative changes at the insertion were assessed and scored histologically and compared with the ultimate tensile stress. Twenty tendons failed at the insertion (the insertion group), and 11 failed in the midsubstance (the midsubstance group). The histologic score of degeneration for the insertion group was significantly higher than that for the midsubstance group (p = 0.0026). There was a negative correlation between the ultimate tensile stress at the insertion and the degeneration score for the insertion group (r = -0.60; p = 0.013). Histologic observations revealed that disruptions of tendon fibers were located mostly in the articular half of the tendon and that they enlarged during mechanical testing in 90% of the specimens of the insertion group. It seems that degenerative changes at the supraspinatus insertion reduce the tensile strength of the tendon and constitute a primary pathogenetic factor of rotator cuff tear.  相似文献

Summary The preparation and properties of two series of castor oil urethane foams, one from castor oil and the other from elaidinized castor oil, were investigated. The first series of foams was made from prepolymers containing 60% of castor oil prepared at increasing temperature levels to vary the degree of crosslinking in the final foams. These foams had lower tensile strengths than observed for a previously prepared foam of 60% castor oil and did not show significant differences in water resistance as crosslinking varied. They were increased nearly 100% in compressive strength with increased crosslinking and had very good shrinkage characteristics as values of only 1 to 2% were obtained. A second series of foams was prepared from 50, 60, 70, and 80% of elaidinized castor oil to compare with foams from a similar series from castor oil. This series of foams of 50 to 80% elaidinized castor oil contents was similar in density (1.7 to 6.7 lbs./cu. ft.), had improved shrinkage characteristics (11, 1, 3, and 4%, respectively), showed increased compressive and tensile strengths (up to 12.1 p.s.i. at 50% compression modulus and 34.7 p.s.i. ultimate tensile for the 60% foam formulation), and had better water-resistance properties (411 to 155%vs. 515 to 170% water absorption) than the analogous foams from castor oil. In general, humid aging only slightly affected the values obtained for the foams and was significant in only a few instances,e.g., decreased tensile in the elaidinized castor oil series. Thus increasing crosslinks in the foam apparently did not improve water resistance but did improve shrinkage characteristics in addition to some increased strength properties, as would be anticipated. Foams from elaidinized castor oil, while similar in density and foaming characteristics to analogous foams from castor oil, exhibited less shrinkage and improved water-resistance. The nature of distributed multimedia applications is such that they require multipeer communication support mechanisms. The multimedia traffic needs to be delivered to end-systems, networks, and end-users in a form that they can handle while satisfying the constraints imposed by the multimedia application. Quality-of-service (QoS) mechanisms that can ensure full quality media playout at high-performance workstations, while at the same time providing appropriately filtered lower quality media for playout at other end-systems, are required. Existing multicast support mechanisms are deficient for this purpose, in a heterogeneous environment, because they work on a common denominator premise where the quality delivered depends on the least capable link or node involved in the multicast session. This paper begins by discussing video compression; it proposes and analyzes the use of filtering mechanisms as means of supporting disparate receiver capabilities and QoS requirements. The paper describes the implementation of a number of filtering mechanisms and highlights the communications architecture within which these mechanisms are built. For distributed multimedia applications the provision of system-wide quality of service (QoS) is essential. The quality-of-service architecture (QoS-A) developed at Lancaster University offers a framework to specify and implement the required performance properties of multimedia applications over integrated-service networks in a heterogeneous environment. The work addresses the problem of lower-level QoS as well as QoS support for multipeer multimedia applications operating in an open communication system. QoS filters have been developed to deal with the problems of heterogeneity in group communication environments. New challenges are also encountered in emerging mobile networks and user mobility; and recent developments in the Internet community highlight the need for appropriate QoS support mechanisms for multimedia applications. The paper describes how the QoS-A research at Lancaster University provides a flexible framework for the monitoring and control of multimedia communications across the broad range of computing systems and networks  相似文献

A simulation model and a rigid body model are used to investigate twisting initiated during the take-off or contact phase. It is shown that it is possible to produce a full twist solely by building up angular momentum in the arms during the contact phase. This method is only half as effective as building up momentum in the whole body during contact. The introduction of twist into a somersault changes the somersault rate by less than 1%. By timing arm adduction appropriately, it is possible to take advantage of nutation and boost the initial value of the tilt angle and so obtain a greater twist rate. Twist may be stopped by the action of piking, since the motion changes from the twisting mode to the wobbling mode of rigid body motion. Transition to and from these two modes can be used to increase or decrease the tilt angle and twist rate.  相似文献
