A new SVLC scheme for image compressing based on wavelet transform

The SVLC(simple variable length code) scheme is very efficient. It is shown to approach the efficiency of Haffman coding for several distributions of symbol probabilities, typically within 1%. Furthermore, it is often possible to transmit the SVLC code with very few bits. Higher compressing ratio can be achieved when this coding scheme is performed in different subbands of an image decomposed by wavelet transformation. The experimental results show that this algorithm is a remarkably effective compressing scheme, having the property that it is not only efficient, but also can be easily fulfilled in software programming.
