Research and Analysis of the Routing Protocols in Multi-Hop Wireless Mobile Ad Hoc Networks

Wireless Mobile Ad hoc NETworks (MANET) are termed as mobile distributed multi hop wireless networks without predetermined topology (preexisting fixed infrastructure) or central control. In order to facilitate communication in such a network, a routing protocol is used to discover routes between nodes. The main aim of any such ad hoc network routing protocol is to meet the challenges of the dynamically changing topology and establish a correct and an efficient communication path between any two nodes with minimum routing overhead and bandwidth consumption. This research paper will provide an insight into these routing protocols and will evaluate them based on a set of fixed parameters. It presents the results of a detailed their characteristics and functionality comparing seven multi hop wireless mobile ad hoc network routing protocols that cover a range of design choices: DSDV, CGSR, WRP, AODV, DSR, TORA, and ABR. At the end of this paper, research directions and open problems in the area are also discussed.
