Lightning protection of overhead power distribution lines

There are two major protective methods against lightning outages on overhead distribution lines. One is by use of surge arresters and the other is by an overhead ground wire. Surge arresters have rather constant effect regardless of the type of lightning outage causes. On the other hand, the effect of an overhead ground wire is quite different against the two major causes: direct lightning hit and induced overvoltages. This paper shows how to design lightning protection for overhead power distribution lines taking these characteristics into account. Copyright © 2007 Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan. Delay‐dependent robust stability analysis for interval neural networks with time‐varying delay

This article deals with the problem of robust stability for interval neural networks with time‐varying delay. By constructing an appropriate Lyapunov–Krasovskii functional, using the S‐procedure and taking the relationship among the time‐varying delay, its upper bound and their difference into account, some linear matrix inequality(LMI) ‐based delay‐dependent stability criteria are obtained without ignoring any terms in the derivative of the Lyapunov–Krasovskii functional. Finally, two numerical examples are given to demonstrate the effectiveness and benefits of the proposed method. © 2011 Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan. Comparison of Fatigue Strengths of Bulk Metallic Glasses Produced by Tilt Casting and High-Pressure Casting

High fatigue strength is one of the important factors that facilitates the industrial usage of bulk metallic glasses (BMGs). Fatigue data were analyzed using the Weibull probability models for BMGs produced with different casting processes in order to study the reliability of fatigue strengths of cast glassy alloys. The fatigue data of tilt-cast and high-pressure-cast BMGs can be explained by a three-parameter Weibull cumulative distribution function (cdf) and a mixture model of two-parameter Weibull cdfs, respectively. We conclude that the cast defects, which reduce fatigue strength, should be eliminated in order to realize a high reliability of fatigue strengths.     

Steady‐state stability of shaft torsional oscillation in an ac‐dc interconnected system with self‐commutated converters

Recent progress in power electronics technology makes it possible to consider applying self‐commutated converters using gate turn‐off thyristors (GTOs) to HVDC transmission systems. Since the self‐commutated converter can be operated stably without depending on ac‐side voltage, the magnitude and the phase angle of the converter output voltage can be controlled independently. Therefore, this type of converter will improve voltage stability at its ac side. On the other hand, shaft torsional oscillation of a thermal power plant caused by the interaction between the shaft‐generator system and the control system of the self‐commutated converter is still an open problem. In this paper, a linearized model for eigenvalue analysis of a power system, including HVDC interconnection with self‐commutated converters, is described to analyze the effect of the self‐commutated converter on the shaft torsional oscillation of a thermal power plant. Then, numerical results from the eigenvalue analysis of the shaft torsional oscillation are presented. Results obtained by the frequency response method are also reported. The numerical results make it clear that parameter regions of DC‐AVR and ACR control systems of self‐commutated converters exist where the shaft torsional oscillation may be caused. © 1999 Scripta Technica, Electr Eng Jpn, 128(4): 25–37, 1999     

The effect of an electric field on boiling heat transfer ofrefrigerant-11-boiling on a single tube

The effect of an electric field on boiling refrigerant R-11 was investigated experimentally. The test section consisted of a flat plate and a single tube with several rows of electrode wire. The influence of refrigerant oil, the surface roughness of the test tube, and polarity of an applied voltage on the heat transfer performance were studied. The following results were obtained: as the applied voltage increased, the number of boiling bubbles decreased but the heat transfer coefficient increased; no deterioration of heat by the oil contamination occurred; and the polarity of the applied voltage affected the boiling heat transfer     

Profiling and Imaging of Phospholipids in Brains of Abcd1‐Deficient Mice

ABCD1 is a gene responsible for X‐linked adrenoleukodystrophy (X‐ALD), and is critical for the transport of very long‐chain fatty acids (VLCFA) into peroxisomes and subsequent β‐oxidation. VLCFA‐containing lipids accumulate in X‐ALD patients, although the effect of ABCD1‐deficiency on each lipid species in the central nervous system has not been fully characterized. In this study, each phospholipid and lysophospholipid species in Abcd1‐deficient mice brains were profiled by liquid chromatography‐mass spectrometry. Among the phospholipid and lysophospholipid species that are significantly more enriched in Abcd1‐deficient mice brains, VLCFA were present in 75, 15, 5, 4, and 1 species of phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine, sphingomyelin, lysophosphatidylcholine, and lysophosphatidylethanolamine, respectively. Most VLCFA were incorporated at the sn‐1 position of phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylethanolamine. Among the phospholipid species that are significantly less enriched in Abcd1‐deficient mice brains, odd‐numbered saturated or mono‐unsaturated fatty acyl moieties are contained in all phosphatidylcholine species. In addition, a number of phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol, and phosphatidylserine species contained highly unsaturated fatty acyl moieties. Intriguingly, 44:1 phosphatidylcholine with VLCFA was mainly distributed in the gray matter, such as the cortex, but not in the white matter in the cerebrum and cerebellum. These results show that ABCD1‐deficiency causes metabolic alternation of long‐chain fatty acids and VLCFA. Moreover, our results imply a molecular mechanism for the incorporation of saturated or monounsaturated VLCFA into the sn‐1 position of phospholipids, and also indicate that the distribution of phospholipids with VLCFA may correlate with the development of X‐ALD.     

The control performance improvement of the optical disk system by correction pulse control

This paper proposes a control system which improves OPU (Optical Pick Up) control performance in an optical disk system. This system can be realized by adding a correction pulse control block which is based on a position error signal onto a conventional position control loop composed of the PID control rule. Using this function, the position error resulting from a physical distortion and acceleration disturbance to the disk can be decreased sharply. Furthermore, this system can decrease the deviation caused by the shock disturbance which cannot be controlled by the PID control rule. In addition, it becomes possible to decrease the overshoot in the impulse response sharply, and realize stable capture of a target position. Since this system can be created with a simple algorithm, it is possible to use it in a wide range of applications. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In vitro selection of aptamers that bind to ribosome-inactivating toxins

Ribosome-inactivating proteins, such as ricin, pepocin and gypsophilin, catalyze the hydrolysis of a single N-glycosidic bond at a specific position in rRNAs. Aptamers targeting pepocin were selected from a random sequence RNA pool that spanned 30 positions. After 8 rounds, the anti-pepocin aptamers were sequenced and a conserved hairpin motif was identified. Interestingly, the selected motif is quite different from the toxin-binding domains of rRNAs.     

Nanosecond and femtosecond mass spectroscopic analysis of a molecular beam produced by the spray-jet technique

The spray-jet molecular beam apparatus enabled us to produce a molecular beam of non-volatile molecules under high vacuum from a sprayed mist of sample solutions. The apparatus has been used in spectroscopic studies and as a means of molecular beam deposition. We analyzed the molecular beam, consisting of non-volatile, solvent, and carrier-gas molecules, by using femtosecond- and nanosecond- laser mass spectroscopy. The information thus obtained provided insight into the molecular beam produced by the spray-jet technique.
