今天的法国具有一套完善的景观体制和工具,其开放和活跃的学术环境造就了百家争鸣的学科多元化现象。但这一切都不是横空出世的,首先与景理一词的渊源和演变历史不可分割,同时与近百年来法国在城市扩张过程中出现的一系列社会和环境问题息息相关。正是在寻找解决具体部题的过程中,景观的概念得到进一步的完善,一个完整的景观体系也同时逐步建立起来。

Aggregate Structures: Material and Machine Computation of Designed Granular Substances

In inanimate nature, large masses of granular substances are in constant processes of formation through perpetual cycles of erosion and accretion. What if architecture was to emulate this behaviour and allow for its own continuous reconfiguration? Karola Dierichs and Achim Menges establish the notion of an ‘aggregate architecture’. Composed of large numbers of unbound yet designed granules, aggregates are based on a fundamentally different logic of construction. In contrast to assembly systems, aggregates materially compute their overall constructional configuration and shape as spatiotemporal behavioural patterns, with an equal ability for both: the stable character of a solid material and the rapid reconfigurability of a fluid. Dystopian Farming

In this project for Manhattan, the typology of the high-rise is redefined. Farmers (producers) and city dwellers (consumers) are brought together in close proximity. Eric Vergne describes how rather than embracing the bucolic notion of the rural farm where food aspires to be grown in its most natural or organic state, this ‘dystopian farm’ by necessity embraces technologically advanced modes of food production such as genetic engineering. Third Natures: Incubators of Public Space

Cristina Díaz Moreno and Efrén García Grinda , founders of the Madrid-based office AMID.cero9, shift the notion of the urban from the classic idea of the complete or ideal city, to one which engages with essential urban phenomena: the dynamics of confrontation, dispute and agreement between individuals, social groups and subcultures. In this way, public spaces are transformed from empty spaces into a real context for social interaction; and active involvement with social exchange becomes the main purpose of a project for a new architecture of the city.

Form,Force, Performance: Multi-Parametric Structural Design

In the 20th century, the classification of structures according to defined building typologies was central to engineering design. Here Professor Klaus Bollinger, Professor Manfred Grohmann and Oliver Tessmann of design engineers Bollinger + Grohmann challenge this preconception. By considering each structure as an individual case in point with inherently complex behaviour, they move away from the notion of a building being a variant of an established type. The Art of Drawing

Today, architecture is inextricably linked with drawing. Drawing and representation are generally regarded as the core skills of the professional architect. Architectural theorist and historian Mario Carpo challenges the notion that architecture has to necessarily be an art of drawing. He reminds us that the architect, as a maker of drawings, is in fact a fairly recent cultural and technical phenomenon - only emerging in early 15th-century Italy. Could, then, the digital revolution of the last 20 years be starting to challenge the drawing's hegemony?     

Dynamic Light: The Media Facades of realities:united

Valentina Croci reviews the recent work of realities:united, who first came into the spotlight in 2003 with their media facade for the Kunsthaus Graz. She highlights how recent projects, such as the Crystal Mesh for the Iluma Building in Singapore and the exterior of the C4 in Cordoba, Spain, transcend the notion of the digital facade as billboard. Engineering Ecologies

Engineering disciplines have, historically, been strongly dominated by physics. Structural and civil engineering are still based on the notion of controlling the forces of physics within our material world. However, a shift from physics to biology as the underlying paradigm of engineering is on the horizon, and with it a fundamental change in the way we conceive and practise architecture. Operationalising Patch Dynamics

Victoria Marshall and Brian McGrath have developed and transferred the ecological model of ‘patch dynamics’ to urban landscape design. It is an approach that stresses the resilient, flexible and adaptable nature of cities, interacting with a ‘notion of disturbance ecology rather than a benign nature’. Here they apply their design approach to Hoboken, on the New Jersey Gold Coast, which, only a hop and a skip from Manhattan, directly across the Hudson from the Financial District, remains culturally and economically diverse.
