We review recent results in the field of organic light-emitting devices (OLED's), with particular attention to the application of organic light-emitting devices to ultra-lightweight, full color, flat-panel displays. We show that OLED brightness, efficiency, operating voltage, and lifetime is sufficient to compete with other flat-panel display technologies such as backlit liquid crystal displays. We describe a novel, tunable OLED consisting of vertically stacked, transparent light-emitting devices which can serve as a color-tunable element in high-resolution full-color display., In addition, the unique physical properties of organic thin films allow for flexible, conformable, or foldable displays which are unobtainable with conventional, inorganic semiconductor technologies 相似文献

Organic semiconductors are poised to transform the world of circuit and display technology. Major electronics firms such as Philips and Pioneer, and smaller companies such as Cambridge Display Technology, Universal Display, and Uniax, are betting that the future holds tremendous opportunity for the low cost and sometimes surprisingly high performance offered by organic electronic and optoelectronic devices. Using organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs), organic full-color displays may eventually replace liquid-crystal displays (LCDs) for use with laptop and even desktop computers. Such displays can be deposited on flexible plastic foils, eliminating the fragile and heavy glass substrates used in LCDs, and can emit bright light without the pronounced directionality inherent in LCD viewing, all with efficiencies higher than can be obtained with incandescent light bulbs 相似文献

We first discuss the position of cameras and displays in digital television systems. It is difficult to realize these devices in digital form so cameras and displays will remain analog for some time, even after television signal processing is implemented digitally. Nevertheless, the importance of camera and display in television systems will not diminish. These devices will always be key elements in the human interface. Second, we describe the current state of the art and future trends in camera and display technology. In addition to providing an overview of the charge coupled device (CCD), we discuss the digital technologies used in a CCD camera. We also provide an overview of currently available displays-CRT's, flat panel displays, projection displays, and head-mounted displays (HMD's)-and discuss future possible lines of research. The UV-excited phosphor plasma display is a promising technology for large area high-resolution color displays. The incorporation of multi-phosphor arrays in such displays requires the use of UV isolation barriers for effective color separation. The resolution limitations of current thick-film technology necessitate the development of new approaches to the fabrication of high density, high resolution barrier structures for flat display devices. A processing technique for the patterning of lead-bearing thick film dielectrics via selective chemical etching in fluoboric acid is presented, which makes possible the fabrication of dielectric barriers 0.025 mm wide and 0.025 mm high for full-color plasma displays with increased resolution. 相似文献

Before high-accuracy graphic displays can be successfully designed or implemented from existing displays, the display distortion need be known to a high degree of accuracy-typically of the order of 0.1 percent of the display area height or better. Present day methods of measuring distortion are clumsy and imprecise. Methods of measurement using moire fringes have been suggested before, but the treatment was intuitive and the interpretation quailtative. In this paper are derived quantitative relationships from which display distortion to the 0.1 percent accuracy mentioned can be obtained using moire fringes. Two distinct methods are described. Full experimental methods, limitations, accuracy of method, etc., are given. Actual case examples illustrate the method. Although the methods developed here were specifically for TV-mode displays, the methods are equally valid for any graphic display device such as cathode-ray tubes (storage or refresh), electromechanical X-Y plotters, flat-screen displays, etc., the only requirement being the ability to display or generate a parallel line pattern. The distortion of graphic input devices such as TV cameras, electronic X-Y input pads, etc., can also be obtained using these methods. 相似文献

We model and analyze the power consumption and resulting temperature rise in active-matrix organic-light-emitting device (AMOLED) displays as a function of the OLED efficiency, display resolution and display size. Power consumption is a critical issue for mobile display applications as it directly impacts battery requirements, and it is also very important for large area applications where it affects the display temperature rise, which directly impacts the panel lifetime. Phosphorescent OLEDs (PHOLEDs) are shown to offer significant advantage as compared to conventional fluorescent OLEDs due to high luminous efficiency resulting in lower pixel currents, reducing both the power consumed in the OLED devices and the series connected driving thin-film transistor (TFT). The power consumption and temperature rise of OLED displays are calculated as a function of the device efficiency, display size, display luminance and the type of backplane technology employed. Tone mapping operators (TMOs) allow the visual appearance of High Dynamic Range (HDR) video to be reproduced on Low Dynamic Range (LDR) displays. While several studies have been made to compare the performance of different TMOs on standard displays, there is only one preliminary study that takes into account the characteristics of Small Screen Devices (SSDs) which are common on mobile platforms that are growing rapidly in popularity. Due to the unique characteristics of mobile devices, the variety of viewing conditions where they are used, and the fact that they are becoming so widespread, it is important to identify what is the best method to deliver HDR video content to these devices.This paper presents an evaluation of HDR video on mobile devices using an HDR display as reference. Six state-of-the-art HDR video tone mappers are evaluated by conducting a psychophysical experiment where participants were asked to rank the tone mappers applied to different HDR video footage. A comparison was made between tone mapped HDR video footage shown on a tablet and an LCD display compared with the same HDR video footage shown simultaneously on an HDR display. This study shows there is a subtle but statistically significant difference in the preference of TMOs between SSD and LDR even though the overall ordering of TMOs is the same across both displays. 相似文献

By measuring the transported electrons produced by transverse sampling pulses, the temporal space-charge distribution of an operating ac plasma display cell is established for the first time. Results show that the space charge buildup continues beyond discharge breakdown (∼ 0.85 µs from the sustain pulse leading edge) and reaches a peak at ∼2.25 µs. These space charges, usually lost in the recombination process due to weak internal field, can be transported out and effectively used in new devices such as shift displays and plasma logic gates. 相似文献
