In multiple application scenarios, need arises to connect a set of disjoint nodes or segments. Examples include connecting a sparsely located data sources, repairing a partitioned network topology after failure, and federating a set of standalone networks to serve an emerging event. Contemporary solutions either deploy stationary relay nodes (RN) to form data paths or employ one or multiple mobile data carriers (MDCs) that pick packets from sources and transport them to destinations. In this paper we investigate the interconnection problem when the number of available RNs is insufficient for forming a stable topology and a mix of RNs and MDCs is to be used. We present a novel algorithm for determining where the RNs are to be placed and planning optimized travel paths for the MDCs so that the data delivery latency as well as the MDC motion overhead are minimized. The performance of the algorithm is validated through simulation. 相似文献

Plasmodium of Physarum polycephalum is a large cell capable of solving graph-theoretic, optimization and computational geometry problems due to its unique foraging
behavior. Also the plasmodium is a unique biological substrate that mimics universal storage modification machines, namely
the Kolmogorov–Uspensky machine. In the plasmodium implementation of the storage modification machine data are represented
by sources of nutrients and memory structure by protoplasmic tubes connecting the sources. In laboratory experiments and simulation
we demonstrate how the plasmodium-based storage modification machine can be programmed. We show execution of the following
operations with the active zone (where computation occurs): merge two active zones, multiply active zone, translate active
zone from one data site to another, direct active zone. Results of the paper bear two-fold value: they provide a basis for
programming unconventional devices based on biological substrates and also shed light on behavioral patterns of the plasmodium. 相似文献

Providing integrated access to multiple, distributed, heterogeneous databases and other information sources has become one of the leading issues in database research and the industry. One of the most effective approaches is to extract and integrate information of interest from each source in advance and store them in a centralized repository (known as a data warehouse). When a query is posed, it is evaluated directly at the warehouse without accessing the original information sources. One of the techniques that this approach uses to improve the efficiency of query processing is materialized view(s). Essentially, materialized views are used for data warehouses, and various methods for relational databases have been developed. In this paper, we first discuss an object deputy approach to realize materialized object views for data warehouses which can also incorporate object-oriented databases. A framework has been developed using Smalltalk to prepare data for data warehousing, in which an object deputy model and database connecting tools have been implemented. The object deputy model can provide an easy-to-use way to resolve inconsistency and conflicts while preparing data for data warehousing, as evidenced by our empirical study. 相似文献

Many collections of scientific data in particular disciplines are available today on the World Wide Web. Most of these data
sources are compliant with some standard for interoperable access. In addition, sources may support a common semantics, i.e.,
a shared meaning for the data types and their domains. However, sharing data among a global community of users is still difficult
because of the following reasons: (i) data providers need a mechanism for describing and publishing available sources of data;
(ii) data administrators need a mechanism for discovering the location of published sources and obtaining metadata from these
sources; and (iii) users need a mechanism for browsing and selecting sources. This paper describes a system, WebSemantics,
that accomplishes the above tasks. We describe an architecture for the publication and discovery of scientific data sources,
which is an extension of the World Wide Web architecture and protocols. We support catalogs containing metadata about data
sources for some application domain. We define a language for discovering sources and querying their metadata. We then describe
the WebSemantics prototype.
