Characterization of Deformability of Spheroidal Cementite by Residual Stress Measurement

This article deals with the characterization of the mechanical behaviors of spheroidized carbon steels, which contain ferrite and spheroidal cementite. The aim of the study is to identify the deformation behaviors of cementite particles by x-ray diffraction and to correlate them to the residual stress state evolution. The stress state evolutions for both phases during an in situ 4-point bending test and after a uniaxial tensile test that have been well followed by x-ray diffraction. After each tensile loading, optical observation is made to correlate the determined residual stress state with the microstructure. The coupling of techniques helps us to characterize the deformation evolution of spheroidal cementite in the carbon steel: at the initial state, the cementite shows the same elastic behavior as the ferrite; at the next state, the ferrite begins to deform plastically but the cementite deforms elastically; then, plastic relaxation occurs in the ferrite while the cementite still deforms elastically until finally breaking.     

Kinetically Stable Bicelles with Dilution Tolerance,Size Tunability,and Thermoresponsiveness for Drug Delivery Applications

Mixtures of a phospholipid (1,2‐dipalmitoyl‐sn‐glycero‐3‐phosphatidylcholine, DPPC) and a sodium‐cholate‐derived surfactant (SC‐C₅) at room temperature formed phospholipid bilayer fragments that were edge‐stabilized by SC‐C₅: so‐called “bicelles”. Because the bilayer melting point of DPPC (41 °C) is above room temperature and because SC‐C₅ has an exceptionally low critical micelle concentration (<0.5 mm ), the bicelles are kinetically frozen at room temperature. Consequently, they exist even when the mixture is diluted to a concentration of 0.04 wt %. In addition, the lateral size of the bicelles can be fine‐tuned by altering the molar ratio of DPPC to SC‐C₅. On heating to ≈37 °C, the bicelles transformed into micelles composed of DPPC and SC‐C₅. By taking advantage of the dilution tolerance, size tunability, and thermoresponsiveness, we demonstrated in vitro drug delivery based on use of the bicelles as carriers, which suggests their potential utility in transdermal drug delivery.     

Suppression of interleukin-2 receptor expression on mouse CD4+ T cells by bovine kappa-caseinoglycopeptide

Bovine kappa-caseinoglycopeptide (residues 106-169, CGP) completely inhibited the PHA-induced proliferation of mouse splenocytes when CGP was added simultaneously with PHA. The inhibitory effect, however, was reduced to about one-half when CGP was added after 24 h of cultivating the splenocytes with PHA or when anti-IL-1ra antibody was added simultaneously with PHA and CGP. On the other hand, CGP bound to mouse CD4+ T cells but not to CD8+ T cells. CGP suppressed IL-2 receptor expression of the PHA-stimulated mouse CD4+ T cells.     

Sodium hyaluronate eyedrops enhance tear film stability

Coeliac disease, also known as gluten-sensitive enteropathy or non-tropical sprue, is a relatively uncommon condition. The dietary presence of gliadin, an alcohol-soluble subfraction of gluten, in immunologically susceptible hosts will lead to small intestinal mucosal inflammation and subsequent mucosal villous atrophy which results in nutrient and vitamin malabsorption. The symptomatic presentations of patients with coeliac disease are related to this malabsorption process which can be reversed in the vast majority of patients with a gluten-free diet.     

Ocular surface damage and tear lactoferrin in dry eye syndrome

Because falls are common among the elderly and are associated with high morbidity and mortality, community surveillance has been recommended. The purpose of this study was to characterize the impact of falls among the elderly on emergency medical transport services (EMS) and to explore the potential for community surveillance of falls through the use of computerized EMS data. Computerized EMS data and United States census data for 1990 for persons aged > or = 65 in Forsyth County, NC, were used to produce EMS transport rates for falls and to make comparisons by age, gender, race, and residence (nursing home vs community). A fall was reported as the cause for EMS summons in 15.1% (613 of 4,058) of cases. Transport rates in 1990 for falls were 7.8 per 1,000, 25.4 per 1,000, and 58.5 per 1,000 for the age groups of 65 to 74 years, 75 to 84 years, and 85 years and older. Rates were higher for females than for males (17.1 per 1,000 v 8.1 per 1,000) and higher for whites than for African-Americans (14.3 per 1,000 v 10.3 per 1,000). Rates for nursing home residents were four times that of community residents (70.6 per 1,000 v 16.0 per 1,000). Over 50% of nursing home fallers were transported between midnight and 0400 compared with 25% of community dwellers. EMS summons for older adults reporting a fall accounts for a significant portion (15%) of all transports in this county. Computerized EMS data demonstrated patterns of falls among the elderly that are consistent with known demographic factors. The potential for using computerized EMS data as a practical means of community surveillance should be further explored.     

Rearrangement of the ventricular capillary network in stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRSP) following a late start of treatment with the angiotensin converting enzyme blocker temocapril

The effects of the angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) blocker temocapril on the capillary network of the left ventricle were studied in stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRSP). The ACE blocker was dissolved in the drinking water and supplied to 24 and 32 week old SHRSP ad libitum for 5 weeks. The capillaries of the wall of the left ventricle were studied using a double staining method to differentiate the arteriolar, intermediate and venular capillary portions. Capillary density increased and capillary domain areas decreased in all capillary portions compared with untreated control SHRSP in both age groups. The proportion of venular capillary portions was increased by temocapril treatment. The results indicate that the late start of ACE blockade caused the regression of the hypertrophied cardiomyocytes, which is characteristic of SHRSP, and the rearrangement of capillary portions. The plasma concentration of angiotensin II was significantly lower in temocapril-treated SHRSP compared to the control group. The implication is that intrinsic angiotensin II exerts an appreciable effect on the function, structure and capillary network in the left ventricular wall in SHRSP.     

Regulation of matrix metalloproteinase-9 and inhibition of tumor invasion by the membrane-anchored glycoprotein RECK

A human fibroblast cDNA expression library was screened for cDNA clones giving rise to flat colonies when transfected into v-Ki-ras-transformed NIH 3T3 cells. One such gene, RECK, encodes a membrane-anchored glycoprotein of about 110 kDa with multiple epidermal growth factor-like repeats and serine-protease inhibitor-like domains. While RECK mRNA is expressed in various human tissues and untransformed cells, it is undetectable in tumor-derived cell lines and oncogenically transformed cells. Restored expression of RECK in malignant cells resulted in suppression of invasive activity with concomitant decrease in the secretion of matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9), a key enzyme involved in tumor invasion and metastasis. Moreover, purified RECK protein was found to bind to, and inhibit the proteolytic activity of, MMP-9. Thus, RECK may link oncogenic signals to tumor invasion and metastasis.
