Oxide glass, one of the most transformative materials in the modern world, breaks easily under load due to its brittleness. Using classical molecular dynamics simulations, we prepared amorphous alumina by consolidating glass nanoparticles at room temperature. We showed that consolidated amorphous alumina exhibits work hardening ability, hence deforms homogeneously and fractures via necking under tension, while amorphous alumina obtained from the traditional melt-quench process fractures catastrophically due to severe shear banding. This finding suggests that if processed properly, amorphous oxides could deform and fracture like ductile metals, which will significantly expand the applications of oxide glasses into new areas where load bearing or mechanical reliability is necessary.  相似文献

Ammonia electrooxidation reaction involving multistep electron-proton transfer is a significant reaction for fuel cells, hydrogen production and understanding nitrogen cycle. Platinum has been established as the best electrocatalyst for ammonia oxidation in aqueous alkaline media. In this study, Pt/nitrogen-doped graphene (NDG) and Pt/tungsten monocarbide (WC)/NDG are synthesized by a wet chemistry method and their ammonia oxidation activities are compared to commercial Pt/C. Pt/NDG exhibits a specific activity of 0.472 mA∙cm–2, which is 44% higher than commercial Pt/C, thus establishing NDG as a more effective support than carbon black. Moreover, it is demonstrated that WC as a support also impacts the activity with further 30% increase in comparison to NDG. Surface modification with Ir resulted in the best electrocatalytic activity with Pt-Ir/WC/NDG having almost thrice the current density of commercial Pt/C. This work adds insights regarding the role of NDG and WC as efficient supports along with significant impact of Ir surface modification.  相似文献

Curing of adhesive bondlines is a critical and time-consuming operation in wind turbine blade manufacturing. Significant variation in adhesive thickness can lead to important differences in thermal histories trough the adhesive bonds due to the exothermic nature of the cure process. Reducing bondline cure cycle time and avoiding adhesive overheating are two competing factors in the design of cure temperature cycles. Predictive models on the impact of adhesive thickness variability in bondline cure temperature cycle is currently limited. Adhesive curing and temperature evolution can be simulated by finite element (FE) models coupling the heat transfer problem with the cure kinetics of the adhesive. The cure kinetics of the adhesive system was characterized by isothermal differential scanning calorimetry experiments and implemented in the FE software Abaqus/CAE by user subroutines. Predictions from the FE model were validated experimentally against temperature readings from the curing of 10, 20, and 30 mm thick adhesive bondlines. To highlight the role that predictive models potentially have in the optimization of bondline cure cycles a 2D cross section model representing the trailing edge of a wind turbine blade was used as case study. It was demonstrated that computational models enable customizing cure profiles for nonuniform adhesive thicknesses, ensuring fully cured bondlines with acceptable mechanical properties.  相似文献

To identify potential biomarkers for improving diagnosis of melioidosis, we compared plasma metabolome profiles of melioidosis patients compared to patients with other bacteremia and controls without active infection, using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-quadruple time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Principal component analysis (PCA) showed that the metabolomic profiles of melioidosis patients are distinguishable from bacteremia patients and controls. Using multivariate and univariate analysis, 12 significant metabolites from four lipid classes, acylcarnitine (n = 6), lysophosphatidylethanolamine (LysoPE) (n = 3), sphingomyelins (SM) (n = 2) and phosphatidylcholine (PC) (n = 1), with significantly higher levels in melioidosis patients than bacteremia patients and controls, were identified. Ten of the 12 metabolites showed area-under-receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) >0.80 when compared both between melioidosis and bacteremia patients, and between melioidosis patients and controls. SM(d18:2/16:0) possessed the largest AUC when compared, both between melioidosis and bacteremia patients (AUC 0.998, sensitivity 100% and specificity 91.7%), and between melioidosis patients and controls (AUC 1.000, sensitivity 96.7% and specificity 100%). Our results indicate that metabolome profiling might serve as a promising approach for diagnosis of melioidosis using patient plasma, with SM(d18:2/16:0) representing a potential biomarker. Since the 12 metabolites were related to various pathways for energy and lipid metabolism, further studies may reveal their possible role in the pathogenesis and host response in melioidosis.  相似文献

This article provides insights pertaining to the first-order phase transformation involved in the growth of densely packed Q-carbon and nanodiamonds by nanosecond laser melting and quenching of diamond-like carbon (DLC) thin films. DLC films with different sp3 content were melted rapidly in a controlled way in super-undercooled state and quenched, leading to formation of distinct nanostructures, i.e., nanodiamonds, Q-carbon, and Q-carbon nanocomposites. This analysis provides direct evidence of the dependence of the super-undercooling on the structural evolution of Q-carbon. Finite element heat flow calculations showed that the super-undercooling varies monotonically with the sp3 content. The phenomenon of solid–liquid interfacial instability during directional solidification from the melt state is studied in detail. The resulting lateral segregation leads to formation of cellular filamentary Q-carbon nanostructures. The dependence of the cell size and wavelength at the onset of instability on the sp3 content of DLC thin films was modeled based on perturbation theory.  相似文献

Variable-speed wind turbines are able to adapt to low wind speeds and therefore have greater efficiency than fixed-speed turbines during partial-load operation. Unfortunately, the high cost and low reliability of the electronics that enable variation in speed have discouraged this mode of operation for distributed wind turbines. Alternatively, a Variable-Ratio Gearbox (VRG) can be integrated into the fixed-speed wind turbine to facilitate operation with a discrete set of variable speeds that boost efficiency. The VRG concept is based upon mature technology taken from the automotive industry and is characterized by low cost and high reliability. In this paper, a model-based design methodology is introduced to study the performance gain of integrating a VRG into a fixed-speed stall-regulated wind turbine system. The results demonstrate how this device can improve the efficiency of the fixed-speed turbine in the partial-load region and the potential to use the VRG to limit power in the full-load region where pitch control is often used.  相似文献
