The Constructed Narratives project has been designed for use in public spaces where there is the opportunity for individuals and groups of people, who are not acquainted with each other, to encounter the game and subsequently each other. The goal is to provide a platform that supports discourse in environments where ‘keeping comfortable distance’ between oneself and others is the norm. The system framework developed for this project can be applied for use in computer supported collaborative learning (CSCL), and collaborative design activities in the tradition of computer supported collaborative work (CSCW). The current domain explored in the Constructed Narratives project is computer systems designed to enable shared experience through play, or computer supported collaborative play (CSCP). This paper examines the learner-centred design methodologies used for the development of the physical artifacts and underlying software and hardware system architecture for the Constructed Narratives project. The design methodology demonstrates how an interdisciplinary team of artists, designers, and technologists can exploit the opportunities inherent in this ‘symmetry of ignorance’ to find solutions for multiple wicked design problems that can arise during the development of an integrated software and hardware system.

As a new branch of grid computing, e-Learning grid is emerging as a nationwide e-Learning infrastructure, which can provide innovative learning experience for learners. In such a grid environment, collaboration services will be the key elements due to the pervasive requirement for cooperative work and collaborative learning. Although there exist enormous research efforts on grid-based collaboration technologies, most of them have many limitations. In this paper, with the findings from the computer support cooperative work (CSCW)/computer support collaborative learning (CSCL) and advantages provided by grid, we propose to build grid-enabled large-scale collaboration environment (GLCE). GLCE focuses on distributed, large-scale, and cross-organizational collaboration through creating group-centered next generation collaboration environment, where both intra-group and inter-group collaboration could be supported. With this idea in mind, we present a grid-based cooperative work framework (GCWF), which aims to implement GLCE with an “upper layer” collaboration middleware based on the special-purpose grid infrastructure designed by our team. The preliminary results of our research on GLCE have been applied to build the learning assessment grid (LAGrid). The goal of LAGrid is to support the formative assessment business in China Radio and TV University (CRTVU) and large-scale collaboration within virtual organization (VO) has been realized.

The field of computer supported collaborative learning (CSCL) is progressing instrumentally and theoretically. Nevertheless, few studies examine the effectiveness and efficiency of CSCL with respect to cognitive, motivational, emotional, and social issues, despite the fact that the role of regulatory processes is critical for the quality of students’ engagement in collaborative learning settings. We review the four earlier lines in developing support in CSCL and show how there has been a lack of work to support individuals in groups to engage in, sustain, and productively regulate their own and the group’s collaborative processes. Our aim is to discuss how our conceptual work in socially shared regulation of learning (SSRL) contributes to effective and efficient CSCL, what tools are presently available, and what the implications of research on these tools are for future tool development.

Most distributed and virtual online environments for and pedagogies of computer‐supported collaborative learning (CSCL) neglect the social and social‐emotional aspects underlying the group dynamics of learning and working in a CSCL group. These group dynamics often determine whether the group will develop into a well‐performing team and whether a sound social space emerges. Using a theory‐based CSCL framework, two studies evaluated whether two tools, Radar and Reflector, supported cognitive, social and socio‐emotional aspects of team development, encouraging promotive interaction and group processing in the teams. While not affecting product quality, tool use did lead to groups who perceived their team as being better developed, as having higher levels of group satisfaction and lower levels of conflicts. The results support that promotive interaction and group processing was increased by using Radar and Reflector.
