Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the major reason for blindness in the industrialized world with limited treatment options. Important pathogenic pathways in AMD include oxidative stress and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) secretion. Due to their bioactivities, fucoidans have recently been suggested as potential therapeutics. This review gives an overview of the recent developments in this field. Recent studies have characterized several fucoidans from different species, with different molecular characteristics and different extraction methods, in regard to their ability to reduce oxidative stress and inhibit VEGF in AMD-relevant in vitro systems. As shown in these studies, fucoidans exhibit a species dependency in their bioactivity. Additionally, molecular properties such as molecular weight and fucose content are important issues. Fucoidans from Saccharina latissima and Laminaria hyperborea were identified as the most promising candidates for further development. Further research is warranted to establish fucoidans as potential therapeutics for AMD.  相似文献

Evolving multimodal mobility needs influences established human–product relationships and requires a deeper insight into color preferences for car interiors. Hence, a study was conducted in which 204 members of a web contest created 1,265 designs. After a peer‐evaluation process, 53 most‐appreciated and 34 least‐preferred interior color compositions were identified and compared to identify patterns in color choices. Besides, visual lightweight design by layering of large interior components such as the seat, a modest use of color and patterns accompanied by repetition and the framing of the entire interior to create a feeling of spaciousness were found. Additionally, differences in the type of color between most and least favored color designs were found. Brown and beige occur more frequently among the top‐ than the worst‐rated designs. Larger surfaces are favored in lighter hues and smaller components in darker hues.  相似文献

Within this paper, we present a novel, straightforward progressive encoding scheme for general triangle soups, which is particularly well‐suited for mobile and Web‐based environments due to its minimal requirements on the client's hardware and software. Our rapid encoding method uses a hierarchy of quantization to effectively reorder the original primitive data into several nested levels of detail. The resulting stateless buffer can progressively be transferred as‐is to the GPU, where clustering is efficiently performed in parallel during rendering. We combine our approach with a crack‐free mesh partitioning scheme to obtain a straightforward method for fast streaming and basic view‐dependent LOD control.  相似文献

The colour resolution of a 14‐bit and an 8‐bit per channel graphics card were evaluated and compared with the just noticeable difference between colours (varying only in luminance) for: (1) a standard observer (based on the CIE 1976 L*u*v* colour space) and (2) real observers in a colour discrimination task. The results of this study show that an 8‐bit per channel graphics card seems adequate for colour discrimination experiments where stimuli only vary in luminance. However, considering that the resolution of the graphics card should be equal to the Nyquist rate, an 8‐bit per channel card turns out to be inadequate. For colour discrimination experiments where stimuli only vary in chromaticity, there is an undersampling of the colour space with respect to MacAdam ellipses when using 8‐bit per channel graphics cards. The extremely fine colour resolution of a 14‐bit per channel graphics card overcomes these problems. Its use allows more accurate measurements of achromatic and chromatic discrimination thresholds and avoids experimental (spatial or luminance) artefacts, such as bandings that can occur on achromatic or chromatic gradients. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The addition of aluminum oxide (Al2O3) as a sintering aid to yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) reduces the required densification temperature. Sintering aids are incorporated using a number of processes which can lead to ambiguity when determining the effect of the sintering aid on the densification mechanism. In this study, a novel method for sintering aid addition, Particle Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD), was used to deposit an amorphous Al2O3 thin film on YSZ particles. Transmission electron microscopy confirmed the deposition of conformal Al2O3 thin films on the surface of the YSZ particles. The addition of Al2O3 to YSZ reduced the temperature at which densification began by ~75°C, and 2.2 wt% Al2O3 addition resulted in a minimum activation energy for the intermediate stage of densification. This concentration is well in excess of the solubility limit of Al2O3 in YSZ, showing that Al2O3 does not enhance the densification of YSZ solely by dissolving into the YSZ lattice and activating volume diffusion. The addition of 0.7 wt% Al2O3 with one Particle ALD cycle enhanced the ionic conductivity of YSZ by 23% after sintering at 1350°C for 2 hours, demonstrating that dense parts with high oxygen ion conductivities can be produced after sintering at reduced temperatures. One Particle ALD cycle is a fast, easily scaled-up process that eliminates the use of solvents and has substantial cost/performance advantages over conventional processing.  相似文献

Observations of single neurons in the primary motor cortex of 1 monkey provided evidence that preliminary perceptual information reaches the motor system before perceptual analysis is complete. Neurons were recorded during a task in which 1 stimulus was assigned to a wrist flexion response and another was assigned to wrist extension. Two stimuli were assigned to a no-go response; each was visually similar to either the flexion or the extension stimulus. When a no-go stimulus was presented, neurons responded with weaker versions of the discharge patterns exhibited to the visually similar stimulus requiring a movement, suggesting that neurons receive partial perceptual information favoring that movement. Functionally separate neuronal populations were identified, and differences in the activations of these provide evidence about the functional effects of preliminary perceptual output on movement control processes.
