In this study, the temperature, precipitation and groundwater level variations and changing patterns with varied time scales are presented for Taipei metropolitan area which consists of the capital city with neighboring counties. Along with the continuous city expansion during the past decades, global warming and heat island effect have generated perceivable negative impacts on environmental and reflect on the climatic and hydrological parameters. In addition to accelerating climate warming, hydrological extremity becomes more evident during the past decades and greatly elevates the risks of drought and floods in the study area. These observations in the Taipei metropolitan area support the common hypothesis that climate variability would increase as climate warms. The air temperature records, in conjunction with hydrological data, provide useful and invaluable information for the ongoing study of subsurface environmental changes resulting from nature and anthropogenic influences in Taipei metropolitan area. The continuing climatic warming and hydrological extremity would create observable impacts on the subsurface environment of Taipei metropolitan area and need to pursue in a fast and efficient pace.  相似文献

Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) are persistent organic pollutants that are resistant to environmental and biological degradation and disperse into various environmental compartments throughout the atmosphere, water, soil, sediments, and food. Many factors, such as age, sex, lifestyle, and metabolism, can explain the distribution of serum levels after humans exposed to PCDD/Fs. The aim of our study was therefore to investigate the PCDD/Fs distribution and profile of the general population in northern Taiwan. All selected subjects were between 18 and 65 years old and proportionally chosen from five age groups based on population distribution of each district or county. Higher serum PCDD/F levels were found in the elder than in the young, and in females than in males. In addition, nonsmokers and passive smokers showed higher levels of PCDD/Fs than active smokers. The serum concentrations of 2,3,4,7,8-PeCDF; 1,2,3,7,8-PeCDD; and 1,2,3,6,7,8-HxCDD in some subjects seemed to increase with their age, which might have been caused by the longer half-lives of these substances. In future studies, more information about food consumption, occupational exposure, open-combustion, and other potential factors needs to be collected to clarify the most important factors affecting the distribution of serum PCDD/Fs in the general population in Taiwan.  相似文献

Indoor exposure to air contaminants penetrating from the outdoor environment depends on a number of key processes and parameters such as the ventilation rate, the geometric characteristics of the indoor environment, the outdoor concentration and the indoor removal mechanisms. In this study two alternative methods are used, an analytical and a numerical one, in order to study the time lag and the reduction of the variances of the indoor concentrations, and to estimate the deposition rate of the air contaminants in the indoor environment employing both indoor and outdoor measurements of air contaminants. The analytical method is based on a solution of the mass balance equation involving an outdoor concentration pulse which varies sinusoidally with the time, while the numerical method involves the application of the MIAQ indoor air quality model assuming a triangular pulse. The ratio of the fluctuation of the indoor concentrations to the outdoor ones and the time lag were estimated for different values of the deposition velocity, the ventilation rate and the duration of the outdoor pulse. Results have showed that the time lag between the indoor and outdoor concentrations is inversely proportional to the deposition and ventilation rates, while is proportional to the duration of the outdoor pulse. The decrease of the ventilation and the deposition rate results in a rapid decrement of the variance ratio of indoor to outdoor concentrations and to an increment of the variance ratio, respectively. The methods presented here can be applied for gaseous species as well as for particulate matter. The nomograms and theoretical relationships that resulted from the simulation results and the analytical methods respectively were used in order to study indoor air phenomena. In particular they were used for the estimation of SO2 deposition rate. Implications of the studied parameters to exposure studies were estimated by calculating the ratio of the indoor exposure to the exposure outdoors. Limitations of the methods were explored by testing various scenarios which are usually met in the indoor environment. Strong indoor emissions, intense chemistry and varying ventilation rates (opening and closing of the windows) were found to radically influence the time lag and fluctuation ratios.  相似文献

A modeling procedure that predicts trihalomethane (THM) formation from field sampling at the treatment plant and along its distribution system using Tampin district, Negeri Sembilan and Sabak Bernam district, Selangor as sources of data were studied and developed. Using Pearson method of correlation, the organic matter measured as TOC showed a positive correlation with formation of THM (r=0.380,P=0.0001 for Tampin and r=0.478,P=0.0001 for Sabak Bernam). Similar positive correlation was also obtained for pH in both districts with Tampin (r=0.362,P=0.0010) and Sabak Bernam (r=0.215,P=0.0010). Chlorine dosage was also found to have low correlation with formation of THM for the two districts with Tampin (r=0.233,P=0.0230) and Sabak Bernam (r=0.505,P=0.0001). Distance from treatment plant was found to have correlation with formation of THM for Tampin district with r=0.353 and P=0.0010. Other parameters such as turbidity, ammonia, temperature and residue chlorine were found to have no correlation with formation of THM. Linear and non-linear models were developed for these two districts. The results obtained were validated using three different sets of field data obtained from own source and district of Seremban (Pantai and Sg. Terip), Negeri Sembilan. Validation results indicated that there was significant difference in the predictive and determined values of THM when two sets of data from districts of Seremban were used with an exception of field data of Sg. Terip for non-linear model developed for district of Tampin. It was found that a non-linear model is slightly better than linear model in terms of percentage prediction errors. The models developed were site specific and the predictive capabilities in the distribution systems vary with different environmental conditions.  相似文献

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of ventilation rate on work performance and perceived air quality through short-term laboratory experiments. The experiment was designed to simulate office work, and a laboratory space was modified using new finish materials to become a typical office space. High levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were found in the exposure chamber, most probably originating from the new finishing materials that were present. Twenty-four subjects were divided into six groups that were randomly exposed to the three ventilation rates, 5, 10, and 20 l/s per person. The subjects performed work tasks three separate times for each ventilation rate over an 8-h exposure period. The work performance of the subjects logarithmically improved with increased ventilation rates, which was similar to the previous research findings. Statistical significance was found for addition task, text-typing task, and memorization task. Increased work performance in this experiment was slightly lower than the results of previous short-term laboratory experiments, yet remained higher than results of previous long-term field experiments. However, it was difficult to directly compare the results of this experiment with those of previous experiments, because of the higher concentration of VOC present in the office rooms and the learning effect associated with the repeated tasks. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: The results of this experiment show that ventilation had positive impacts on perceived air quality and work performance for the subjects tested. Work performance logarithmically increased by approximately 2.5-5% as ventilation rates were increased from 5 to 20 l/s per person. The positive effect of ventilation rate on work performance was shown to be limited at the low ventilation rate. The positive effects on work performance were at lower ventilation rates. The learning effect in repeated work performance tasks could increase the uncertainty of the work performance analysis in 8-h exposure period.  相似文献

Advanced treatment technologies that control multiple contaminants are beneficial to drinking water treatment. This research applied UV/H2O2 for the simultaneous degradation of geosmin, 2-methylisoborneol, four trihalomethanes and six haloacetic acids. Experiments were conducted in de-ionized water at 24 ± 1.0 °C with ng/L amounts of odorants and μg/L amounts of disinfection byproducts. UV was applied with and without 6 mg/L H2O2. The results demonstrated that brominated trihalomethanes and brominated haloacetic acids were degraded to a greater extent than geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol. Tribromomethane and dibromochloromethane were degraded by 99% and 80% respectively at the UV dose of 1200 mJ/cm2 with 6 mg/L H2O2, whereas 90% of the geosmin and 60% of the 2-methylisoborneol were removed. Tribromoacetic acid and dibromoacetic acid were degraded by 99% and 80% respectively under the same conditions. Concentrations of trichloromethane and chlorinated haloacetic acids were not substantially reduced under these conditions and were not effectively removed at doses designed to remove geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol. Brominated compounds were degraded primarily by direct photolysis and cleavage of the C-Br bond with pseudo first order rate constants ranging from 10−3 to 10−2 s−1. Geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol were primarily degraded by reaction with hydroxyl radical with direct photolysis as a minor factor. Perchlorinated disinfection byproducts were degraded by reaction with hydroxyl radicals. These results indicate that the UV/H2O2 can be applied to effectively control both odorants and brominated disinfection byproducts.  相似文献

Sewage contamination in shallow lake sediments is of concern because the pathogens, organic matter and nutrients contribute to the deterioration of the water-bodies' health and ecology. Sediment cores from three shallow lakes (Coneries, Church and Clifton Ponds) within Attenborough nature reserve located downstream of sewage treatment works were analysed for TOC, C/N, δ13C, δ15N, bacterial coliforms and faecal sterols. 210Pb and 137Cs activities were used to date the sediments. Elemental analysis suggests that the source of organic matter was algal and down profile changes in δ13C indicate a possible decrease in productivity with time which could be due to improvements in sewage treatment. δ15N for Coneries Pond are slightly higher than those observed in Church or Clifton and are consistent with a sewage-derived nitrate source which has been diluted by non-sewage sources of N. The similarity in δ15N values (+ 12‰ to + 10‰) indicates that the three ponds were not entirely hydrologically isolated. Analysis by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) reveals that Coneries Pond had sterol concentrations in the range 20 to 30 μg/g (dry wt.), whereas, those from Clifton and Church Ponds were lower. The highest concentrations of the human-sourced sewage marker 5β-coprostanol were observed in the top 40 cm of Coneries Pond with values up to 2.2 μg/g. In contrast, Church and Clifton Pond sediments contain only trace amounts throughout. Down-profile comparison of 5β-coprostanol/cholesterol, 5β-coprostanol/(5β-coprostanol + 5α-cholestanol) and 5β-epicoprostanol/coprostanol as well as 5α-cholestanol/cholesterol suggests that Coneries Pond has received appreciable amounts of faecal contamination. Examination of 5β-stigmastanol (marker for herbivorous/ruminant animals) down core concentrations suggests a recent decrease in manure slurry input to Coneries Pond. The greater concentration of β-sitosterol in sediments from Church and Clifton Ponds as compared to Coneries is attributed in part to their greater diversity and extent of aquatic plants and avian faeces.  相似文献

Research regarding the magnitude of ultrafine particle levels at highway toll stations is limited. This study measured ambient concentrations of ultrafine particles at a highway toll station from October 30 to November 1 and November 5 to November 6, 2008. A scanning mobility particle sizer was used to measure ultrafine particle concentrations at a ticket/cash tollbooth. Levels of hourly average ultrafine particles at the tollbooth were about 3-6 times higher than those in urban backgrounds, indicating that a considerable amount of ultrafine particles are exhausted from passing vehicles. A bi-modal size distribution pattern with a dominant mode at about < 6 nm and a minor mode at about 40 nm was observed at the tollbooth. The high amounts of nanoparticles in this study can be attributed to gas-to-particle reactions in fresh fumes emitted directly from vehicles. The influences of traffic volume, wind speed, and relative humidity on ultrafine particle concentrations were also determined. High ambient concentrations of ultrafine particles existed under low wind speed, low relative humidity, and high traffic volume. Although different factors account for high ambient concentrations of ultrafine particles at the tollbooth, measurements indicate that toll collectors who work close to traffic emission sources have a high exposure risk.  相似文献
