Rip currents near coastal structures commonly occur in Lake Michigan in the Great Lakes region of the United States. Lack of timely warning due to undocumented characteristics of rip currents and no assessment tool can contribute to tragic drownings incidents. In this paper, we characterized rip current occurrences near breakwater structures and developed an assessment tool for providing timely rip current warnings to beachgoers at the study site, City of Port Washington, WI. Characteristics of rip currents near the structure were observed from field measurements or visual images. Deflection rip currents had speeds of ~ 0.2 m/s and lasted for several hours. The rip current occurrences were associated with environmental proxies. It was found that rip currents can occur even when the water appears calm near the structure. A Structure Rip Checklist and Assessment Matrix (SRiCAM) with a four-tiered risk was developed and validated using observations. Furthermore, the SRiCAM was integrated into cyberinfrastructure with a data contingency plan to provide real-time warnings to the public. The applicability of the SRiCAM to other locations across Lake Michigan was further tested and results are promising. Overall, the SRiCAM has the potential to be widely extended to foster recreational water safety and resilience to rip current hazards in the Great Lakes.  相似文献

The Simplistic formation, advantageous configuration, non-colossal magnetoresistance and broadband absorption are important parameters for microwave absorbent materials. In this study, a core-shell nanocomposite comprising of Sn-filled carbon nanotubes (Sn/CNTs) was prepared by arc discharge method. The microstructure, morphology and surface composition of Sn/CNTs-based core-shell nanocomposites were characterized in detail. Sn/CNTs nanocomposite showed a magnetic signal due to the broken bonds and defects at interfaces in Sn/CNTs. The weak ferromagnetism was found to be helpful in improving magnetic permeability in the Sn/CNTs which confirms its role as a magnetic loss material under incident electromagnetic wave. Sn-filled CNTs revealed an appropriate value of dielectric constant, which plays an important role in impedance matching upon incident electromagnetic wave. The composite of Sn-CNTs and paraffin with a 50 wt % loading showed the lowest reflection loss (RL) of ?43.87 dB at 10 GHz, with a wide effective absorption band (RL ≤ ?10 dB) of 3 GHz in thickness of 2.3 mm. This enhanced performance is attributed to the combined effect of the conduction loss in one-dimensional core-shell architecture, the interfacial loss Sn-CNT interface, the magnetic loss due to defects-induced ferromagnetism in Sn shell, and in the carbon-containing atomic layers of CNTs.  相似文献

In this work, Zn-Ni co-modified LiMg0.9Zn0.1-xNixPO4 (x = 0–0.1) microwave dielectric ceramics were fabricated using a solid state synthesis route. Rietveld refinement of the XRD data revealed that all ceramic samples have formed a single phase with olivine structure. SEM images showed that the samples have a dense microstructure, that agrees with the measured relative density of 97.73 %. Based on the complex chemical bond theory, Raman and infrared reflectance spectra, we postulate that εr is mainly affected by the ionic polarizability, lattice and bond energy, while P-O bond plays a decisive role in Q×f and τf value. Optimum properties of Q×f ~ 153,500 GHz, εr ~ 7.13 and τf ~ ?59 ppm/°C were achieved for the composition LiMg0.9Zn0.06Ni0.04PO4 sintered at 875 ℃ for 2 h. This set of properties makes these ceramics an excellent candidate for LTCC, wave-guide filters and antennas for 5 G/6 G communication applications.  相似文献

A series of 3 C-SiC coatings were prepared by organometallic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) using precursor solution containing a varying proportion of commercial-grade hexamethyldisiloxane (HMDSO) and n-hexane. The phase composition, bonding state, and microstructure of 3 C-SiC coatings were studied in detail by grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXRD), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The microstructure and mechanical properties of the optimal 3 C-SiC coating were characterized by scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and nanoindentation, respectively. Our results revealed that the amount of undesired graphite phase can be significantly reduced in the 3 C-SiC coating by introducing hydrogen gas in the reaction chamber alongside increasing the ratio of HMDSO/n-hexane in the precursor mixture. The STEM results revealed that the optimal coating was predominantly composed of nano-crystalline 3 C-SiC grains alongside a small amount of amorphous graphite. The hardness and elastic modulus of the optimal coating were 38.19 GPa and 363.2 GPa, respectively.  相似文献

High-capacity and affordable all-solid-state Na-ion batteries have gathered increasing interest in recent years owing to low-cost sodium, which contributes to reducing the price of these Na-ion batteries to approximately 70% of that in lithium batteries. However, in terms of electrolyte performance and battery cost, the complete replacement of lithium batteries has a long way to go. In this work, low-cost and high-safety Na2S·9H2O materials are used in synthesizing Na3SbS4 solid electrolyte, the price of which is only one-fifth that of high-purity Na2S. The structure and electrochemical properties are studied through X-ray diffraction analysis, Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and electrochemical tests. Results indicate that a multiphase Na3SbS4 structure containing cubic and tetragonal phases formed after heat treatment at 300 °C. In addition, a third phase transition of Na3SbS4 is inferred after further heating at 600 °C. This phase structure contributes to the improvement of electrochemical performance by promoting increasing ionic conductivity to 0.54 mS cm?1 at room temperature (25 °C) and reducing activation energy to 0.076 eV. This work provides an affordable material with good electrochemical properties and not only simplifies the preparation but also greatly reduces the risk of the process.  相似文献

This work investigated incorporation of Nannochloropsis salina into renneted dairy gels and curd. Whole and ruptured microalgal cells did not impair κ-casein macropeptide cleavage by the rennet enzyme. However, insoluble components of ruptured cells impeded gelation, presumably by hindering interactions between renneted casein micelles. Confocal imaging showed that whole cells were retained and homogenously distributed within the protein network of the gels and cooked curd, whereas ruptured algae formed large aggregates that altered the protein matrix. Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) in the whole microalgal cells was incorporated within the curds, with considerably less EPA retained for ruptured cells. Soluble algal debris did not impair gelation, however EPA wasn't retained in the curd. The study demonstrates that nutrient enrichment of renneted dairy products is possible by incorporating whole microalgal cells to displace milk fat with protein and the beneficial long-chain omega-3 fatty acid EPA. Future research into the optimisation of product organoleptic properties is required.  相似文献
